II.iii
Friar Laurence--the priest Romeo says he is going to find at the end of II.ii--is introduced in II.iii through a lengthy soliloquy. In this speech, he philosophizes about mankind, using the plant in his hands as a vehicle to make a point. So, after analyzing the diction of this soliloquy in class, discuss his main point about humanity.

What Friar Laurence meant was everything is born and dies on earth. It is necessary for life to continue. However when something dies, something new will grow. Then he goes on to say "Nor aught so good but..." By this he meant plants are created for good use, like medicine, but sometimes it is misused in negative ways, like poison. Just like humans, we are born positive but some die minipulated and used for bad. But when the bad dies it leaves room for the better man. It is a cycle that allows life to continue.
ReplyDeleteI think friar Laurence is using plants as an analogy for different types of people. He constantly mentions how some plants can be made into great medicine and some can be deceiving and have poison inside. I think that he is trying to say that some people are just born good and are are great human beings, while some people, although they look normal on the outside can have poison within and be evil.
ReplyDeleteWhat Friar Laurence is saying in Act 2, Scene 3 is that all people have good in them. The beautiful flowers represent their virtues. There are many of them and different people have different virtues. But if people's qualities are misused, they could be used for bad things, and a horrible human trait can be the cause of their downfall.
ReplyDeleteFriar Lawrence meant that nothing on Earth is ever all good or all evil. Sometimes good things can be used for bad purposes. He showed this theory with the example of the plants poison being used to cure people and to kill people. On the other hand,Friar Lawrence refers to getting rid of the evil to make room for the good. He thought he could end the fighting between the Capulets and the Montagues by the union of Romeo and Juliet.
ReplyDeleteFriar Lawrence is saying that people have good sides and bad sides. Some people can be happy all the time and always make you happy. Other people are always in a bad mood and make you feel down. The bad in this play is the montagues and capsulets fighting and the good is Romeo and Juliet meeting and the families finally putting aside there differences
ReplyDeleteFriar Lawrence is trying to say that humans are like flowers. They can be used for good medicinal purposes or used to kill; poision. We as human are entitled to our opinion and our decisions. Some choose to use our bodies and our mind for good, and some use it for bad. Through the marriage of Romeo & Juliet Friar Lawrence feels as though that he could end this bad blood between both families and stop the fighting and enter a new age of peace.
ReplyDeleteFriar Lawrence is saying that people only have two sides. People have a good side, and people have a bad side. The peope who choose to act on the good side try to make others around them happy while those who act on the bad side try to spread their misery and make everyone around them miserable. "some people just want to watch the world burn" In this play, Romeo and Juliets love represent the good, while the to rivaling families represent the bad
